Background
Ali Bezer is a multi-disciplinary artist who is based on the Gold Coast, Australia. Her practice has explored a wide variety of mediums and subject matter, yet her work is unified through an overarching interest in transitory states. Bezer interprets what is unseen, multi-sensory, and fleeting into stable material forms. She is perhaps most recognized for her sculptural installations that visualize various soundscapes and noises. However, her work has also expressed other liminal subject matter, including mystic and internalized concepts of the body, cosmic forces, psychological states, and speculation about the afterlife.
Bezer’s training as an artist began in her teen years through her apprenticeship in Classical painting techniques with a master painter and restorer Dirk van de Lindt. She was accepted into the Queensland College of Art for a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2006 and pursued a major in Drawing and Printmaking. She was awarded first-class Honours in 2011 and also received the St Andrews Hospital Art Prize for her project that interpreted local wildlife sounds into graphic art-scores.
In 2012 Bezer was granted the Post Graduate Scholarship to support her research into cross-sensory perception. In 2016 she was awarded her Ph.D. for studio research on the visualization of abstract cosmic noises. During and after her doctoral studies she has worked as a tutor at QCA, teaching drawing and printmaking, while also working in her other career in health care.
Bezer has exhibited widely at cultural venues including Metro Arts, Woolloongabba Art Gallery, the Hold Artspace, Outerspace, Griffith University galleries as well as regional art galleries such as Kingaroy, Gympie, Newcastle, and Logan. Bezer conducted a residency at The Walls Artspace in 2016 and a long-term residency at St Andrews Hospital (2017-18). She has worked in various ARI studios in Brisbane and has recently re-established a private studio on the Gold Coast.
